Exercise #6: Missing psychiatric patient found in Gippsland

Police have confirmed they located missing psychiatric patient Neville Garden in Gippsland this morning.

The 45-year-old was seen around 9.15 by a number of Mallacoota residents who reported him to the police.

Neville Garden was on a day outing with hospital staff in Southbank when he wandered off about 2.30pm on Sunday.

Commander Robert Lambert said in a media conference yesterday police believed Mr Garden’s moves were “not spontaneous” and there may have been an amount of preparation involved.

Mr Garden was ordered to be confined to Thomas Embling for 18 years in 1995, after he has shot dead a milk bar owner and attempted to murder his wife.

Mr Garden is on medical treatment and requires daily medication.

Commander Lambert said Mr Garden was not an escapee, rather an absconder from a mental institution, who was not guilty of a criminal offence, at this stage.

Garden has been arrested and will fly back to Melbourne where he is to be interviewed by the Armed Offenders Squad.
